Distance Teaching

Elluminate

One feature we learned about from the first presentation is that we can print what we have written to send it to students. Additionally, we are able to change the layout of the screen: default is the generally preferable setting for this option. Another possibility is using the video camera to video chat or send video of one's self to students. We can also make notes on whatever we have entered into the program.
In our presentation, we showed others how to use the drawing toolbar to the left of the main frame displayed to students. We used the pen, highlighter, drew filled and outlines of rectangles and circles, drew lines, and showed points of interest. Further, we explained the uses of the two different types of text boxes: one of which stretches to the text and the other which confines the text to the drawn box size.
The fourth group showed how to use the chat feature, including how to decide who in a group will be communicated with, whether one or more people. There are also several ways to adjust the settings for verbally speaking to students by means of a microphone attached to the computer.

Theories for Distance Teaching

Some theories that influence distance teaching are: social constructivism, cooperative learning, knowledge building, and collaborative learning. It often focuses on students teaching each other and learning through interaction with peers. These concepts are aligned with the view of education progressivism. Cooperative learning creates conflict and leads students to learn how to overcome those conflicts. A combination of online educative processes and traditional forms of education can improve the education that students receive. Content, pedagogical, and technology knowledge is central to TPACK.

Audacity

Audacity is software to edit audio tracks. Users can start with several common audio formats and edit it piece-by-piece. Background sounds/music can be added. Two mono tracks can be put together into a single stereo track or multiple tracks can be combined together into a single stereo or mono track with the multiple tracks combined into the available tracks. Numerous effects can also be added to change the sound of the audio. Splicing and splitting sections of audio tracks is another feature of Audacity.

OneNote

OneNote is a program that is part of some Microsoft Office Suites. It functions well as a portfolio with options to allow editing by an individual, group, or anyone. Changes made by an individual with permission to edit the portfolio will appear immediately in the copies that others who access the portfolio view if they are connected to the Internet at time, or they will be synchronized with each participant's own copy as they connect to the Internet if they were not connected when the other member made the changes. Files can be inserted in various ways: a copy of the file can be placed on the page, a printout of some file formats may be inserted to allow for notes to be written on the page, and a link to the file can be inserted to save on file space. OneNote is a useful program for sharing information and files across distances with immediate updates to people with access to the portfolio for quick effective communication.
